About
Hello! I'm Heather - a professional flutist and food enthusiast who loves to be "re-creative" in the kitchen.
I love cooking and eating delicious meals, and I've always admired people who can walk into the kitchen and simply whip up an interesting combination of foods from scratch without following a recipe. I'm not one of those people. In fact, when I do try to make something up on the spot, I'm often disappointed with the results. I prefer following recipes. But that's not to say that I never make substitutions or deviate from the instructions. I like to think of a recipe as a guide, sort of a blueprint for creating an amazing dish. It's similar to playing classical music. Although some classical musicians do compose, most do not today. Composers create the score, and performers "re-create" the score, interpreting what the composer wrote. To me, it's the same in the kitchen. Why re-invent the wheel? If a talented chef has already created the recipe for apple pie and tested it hundreds of times, trust him or her on the basics. But if you want to add some blueberries in place of some of the apples or if you want to make a top crust that looks like a smiley face instead of the traditional lattice work, by all means, go ahead! For me, it's both fool-proof and fun to be "re-creative". My sense is that many people are like me, and to those people I'd say don't feel intimidated if you don't know where to start. Cooking doesn't have to be daunting OR boring when you follow the easy recipes I've selected. All these recipes were selected with the busy cook in mind - perfect for people working full time jobs, parents who need to prepare meals quickly, and musicians who don't want to lose valuable practice time to complicated cooking projects. Yes, some recipes do take a little advance planning, but these are not the all-day-in-the-kitchen types of recipes. I started this site as a response to the many requests I get for recipes like No-Bake Protein Bars, Shiitake Bacon, or Soft Gruyère. You'll find a variety of recipes, some on the healthier side, and some on the more decadent side. Everything featured here is vegan (why?) and many are gluten-free, soy-free, and/or refined sugar-free; Look for the allergen labels at the top of each recipe page. I hope you'll soon see how fun it is to eat your fruits and veggies in new and exciting ways! Enjoy! *All food photos were taken with my LG G5 phone's camera or iPhone 8's camera. (nothing fancy!) |
